Using the NHI IC card

  • What is an NHI IC card?

The NHI IC card is a smartcard integrating the information of NHI Card, Catastrophic Illness Card, the Child Healthcare Handbook and the Maternity Healthcare Handbook. When you are seeking medical services at a medical institution, you will not need to bring any identity documents and other healthcare handbooks, except the NHI IC Card. In those years of the paper NHI card, beneficiaries needed to change a new card after seeking medical services for 6 times and to renew the card every year. After the introduction of the NHI IC Card, beneficiaries will not need to renew the card for 5 to 7 years.

  • What data are stored in the NHI IC card?
    1. Data on the front side of the NHI IC card
    2. On the front side of the NHI IC card there is photo, name, ID card number and date of birth of the insured and the serial number of the card.
  • Data stored in the IC chip on the card
The IC chip includes four data storage areas, including the Personal Basic Data, Healthcare Data, Medical Area, and Public Health Administration Area.
  • How to use the NHI IC card?
    1. Registration
When seeking medical services at a medical institution, there is no difference in uses between the NHI IC card and the paper NHI card. The only difference is that medical institutions use the special NNI IC card reader to complete the registration for you. In doing so, you will not need to waiting for a long time for the registration. Moreover, your photo is appeared on the NHI IC card and you will not need to show other identity documents while registration.
    2. Medical visits
The NHI IC Card normally provides six medical visit vacancies. Another six vacancies will be renewed automatically after they are used. Children under 6 will be given 18 vacancies and senior at or over 70 will be given 12 vacancies. When using the NHI IC card in medical services, the computer will automatically deduct the vacancy in the card. After using up all the vacancies in the card, beneficiaries may renew the vacancies in the card from a government information kiosk or the card reader of medical institutions. In this case, the renewal of card of citizens who no longer subscribe to the NHI or who have not pay the overdue NHI premiums will be rejected.
    3. Card renewal
The expiry date of an NHI IC Card will be renewed every year. The next date of birth of he beneficiary will be the expiry date of the NHI IC Card. In this case, beneficiaries must renew their NHI IC Card every year within 30 days after their DOB.
  • Where to update data in the NHI IC card?
    1. Any NHI branch, liaison office and joint outpatient clinic.
    2. Township (town, city or district) office
    3. NHI IC card information kiosk
    4. Other: Places where approved for setting the card reader by the BNHI.
    5. PIN setup
You will not need to set any PIN for your NHI IC card before you can use it. You may set one to protect the privacy of your privacy with a card reader, if necessary.
    6. Forget PIN
If you forgot the PIN you have set to your NHI IC card, please submit the original (or photocopy) of documents of identity to apply for a change or cancellation of PIN at a BNHI branch or liaison office, either in person or by post.
  • How to keep your NHI IC card?
